Why is drone battery not as compact and durable (high endurance) like mobile phone battery?

The word "drone" seems to be very big, but in modern society, it has penetrated into all aspects of people's lives.

Whether it is military, agricultural, or industrial drones, they can make their own contributions in areas where manpower cannot be used well.

With people's use of UAVs and the broadening of usage scenarios, the requirements for UAV performance are getting higher and higher.

So, for civilian drones (with a flight time of less than 30 minutes), maintaining a flight time of more than ten to twenty minutes requires a battery with a larger volume and weight, which will undoubtedly affect the overall weight and volume of the drone.

So, people will have this question, why the battery of mobile phones can be compact and long-lasting, some mobile phone batteries can even be used for more than a few days, why can’t the batteries of drones be compact and long?

How about time usage, even after a short flight, the charging time required is much longer than that of a mobile phone battery?

That's because the power supply voltage of the mobile phone battery is a single lithium battery voltage, which is 3.7V, so mAh is the mAh under this voltage.

Taking 4500mAh as an example, the total energy storage is 3.7V*4500mAh=16.65Wh.

Take UAV products with a battery life of 20-30 minutes as an example.

They generally use three-string or four-string lithium batteries.

The power supply voltage is generally about 12-15V. If the battery capacity is 3800mAh, the total energy storage is That is 15V*3800mAh=57Wh.

The energy of 57Wh is three times larger than that of 16.65Wh, but as a drone battery, the battery life is much shorter than that of a mobile phone.

In fact, the battery of the drone is not exactly the same as the battery of the mobile phone, and the battery discharge C rate required by the drone will be higher.

A higher discharge C value can support the load-bearing flight of the quadcopter, and if it accelerates or flies in strong winds, the battery life of the drone will become shorter.

The use of mobile phone batteries is a continuous discharge process, and does not require continuous high-current discharge like drones, so even with the same capacity of mobile phone batteries and drone batteries, mobile phone batteries can last longer.

On the other hand, if a drone battery with the same size and weight as a mobile phone battery, often due to its high discharge C rate, even if the stored power is as much as the mobile phone battery, its power will be used faster.

So for now, the battery life of professional civilian drones is generally about 30 minutes, while lighter toy drones, subject to cost and weight, will often be equipped with batteries with shorter battery life (less than 10 minutes).

Regardless of whether it is a professional drone or a toy drone, during the purchase process, we recommend that it can be used with more spare batteries in order to better guarantee the user experience of the user.
